RIFLE SHOOTING.

PAEROA DEFENCE CLUB. 11. M. SHAND’S TROPHY SHOOT. There was a good attendance of members of the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club on the local rifle range on Saturday to compete in a handicap competition for the first trophy shoot, a trophy donated by Mr H. M. Shand. This was also the first round for the club championship and the club handicap aggregate. The ranges used were 300yds and 500yds, the conditions being seven shots and two sighters. The limit up to which the handicap could be taken was 64. The weather conditions for shooting were fairly good, and some good scores resulted. ■ The finish was so close that four of the riflemen reached the limit. The deciding factor, as' fixed by the National Rifle Association rules, is the best score off the rifle at the longer range, and if a tie still results the best total at the two ranges off the rifle. If the winner is still not found the count back is taken. Of the four who reached the limit Dep.-Prcsident Wells and Cadet A. Simmonds remained in after taking into consideration the best score at the longer range, and on the best score off the rifle at the two ranges the winner of the trophy proved to be Cadet A. Simmonds. The scores were as follows :—

Cadet A. Simmonds, 30 at 300yds, 32 at 500yds, handicap 7, total 64 ; Dep.Pres. R. I. Wells, 29, 32, 3—64 ; Rfm. H. A. Morrison, 30, 31, 8 —64 ; Rfm. E. Turton, 25, 31, 8—64 ; Captain H. ( Simmonds, 29, 34, scr.—63 ; Rfm. R. I. Roberts, 31, 25, 7—63 ; Rfm. L. Morris, 26, 28, 8—62 ; Rfm. A. A. Jenkinson, 27, 30, 4—61 ; Rfm. W. A. Reid, 27, 29, 4—60 ; Rfm. R. W. Roberts, 28, 24, B—6o8 —60 ; Pres. F. C. Hubbard, 27, 28, 2—57. Next Saturday another trophy shoot will be held for a trophy generously donated by the Farmers’ Trading Co. This will also be the second shoot in the club championship and handicap aggregate. The ranges to be used are 500yds and 600yds.
