THE KEREPEEHI BLOCK
PREPARING FOR SETTLEMENT. ROADING AND DRAINAGE. Much work is now proceeding on the Kerepeehi block in preparation for opening the area for settlement before the end of the financial year. The Makumaku road, which crosses the block from the Awaiti canal to the Reservoir canal parallel with the Kerepeehi-Kaihere road, is now being metalled. Four inches of red metal will be laid above eight inches- of Wharekawa gravel. Work started this week and is proceeding rapidly. Fifteen relief workers who are camped near the ferry have been engaged in digging subdivisional drains for the last few months. There is much rough feed on the block, and the new settlers will be able to graze cattle from the day they take possession, but one job which should engage their early attention is the eradication of foxglove and blackberry, which are growing in small patches throughout the area.
