SWIMMING CLUB.
OPENING OF SEASON. INTERESTING CONTESTS. The official opening of the season of the Paeroa Amateur Swimming Club was held at the “baths on Friday evening. Considering the many counterattractions, there was a good attendance. Owing to the coldness of the water it was ■ difficult to persuade swimmers to come forward, but nevertheless there were some interesting events during the night.
The president, Mr W. D. Nicholas, in extending a hearty welcome to all, said the club was now well established. The past season had been a particularly successful one, and many interesting races were witnessed. The season was made successful chiefly owing to the whole-hearted support and cooperation given to the committee ■by members. For this he wished to thank the members and assure them that their efforts were appreciated not only by the committee but by the public also. He knew he had no need to ask for this co-operatfon and club spirit, as it was already being demonstrated, and he ventured to predict another successful season. The programme mapped out for the season was rather an ambitious one, but he was confident that with the help of members the committee would have no need to be at all anxious as to its results. The first item was the visit of the Australian swimmers, who were to appear here on December 9. While this would not be a money-making event for the club, the committee was convinced that it was doing the right thing in having the swimmers here in order’ that our young folk might see just “how to swim.” Having this in mind, the committee at its last meeting fixed the admittance for schoolchildren at 6d. This would allow all to he present. He hoped that some of the club members would strive to emulate the coming visitors and thus place the Paeroa Amateur’ Swimming Club on the map. As a result 'of Miss Stockley’s visit last year there was quite an improvement in some of the club’s swimmers, who took careful notice of Miss Stockley’s method of swimming. At the February carnival, said the president, the 100yds South Auckland Centre championship would be swum, and this should prove a big draw for this carniyal. It was also proposed to run another carnival in February, while the camp was on. The club evenings had been put on a better footing, and something definite for each night had been arranged. It was hoped to make the evenings not only recreative, but also instructive. The committee had decided to apply for two cups which had been presented by the Herbert Smith Trust, and these would be competed for by boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 15. The speaker thanked the Paeroa Borough- Council for the willing help it had given the club. Such help had been much appreciated by the committee, and it showed that the council was anxious for the club to succeed. Mr Nicholas then called on Master M. Chamberlain to take the first dive and declared the season opened. The results of the races were as follows :— e Boys under 1.4, 33 l-3yds.—M. Chamberlain, scr., 1 ; W. Waines, 6sec., 2 ; W.
