CHURCH BAZAAR.

FUNCTION AT TURUA. GOOD SUPPORT ACCORDED. A fail’ measure of public support was accorded the annual bazaar organised by the Turua Anglican Church Ladies’ Guild which was held in the Turua Town Hall yesterday afternoon and in the evening. There was a steady stream of buyers during the afternoon to the various stalls, and during the evening numerous competitions, and later dancing, were added attractions. The bazaar was opened at 2 p.m. by Mr W. Bongard, Mayor of Thames, who mentioned that it was hoped to raise £lOO to remove the debt on the vicarage. When introducing Mr and Mrs Bongard the vicar, the Rev. D. Maddison, spoke of the constant efforts necessary to keep the finances of a new parish on a sound basis. A large amount of money had been raised in the past six years, for all sections of the community had assisted the Anglicans in a wonderful manner. All the stalls were attractively decorated and well laden, and, with the stall-holders, were as follows : — Cakes, Misses Mules (2) and Mrs F. C. Robinson ; produce, Mesdames F. Loader and J. Hamilton ; sweets, Misses Madgwick, Hamilton, Griffiths, and Sutton; sewing, Mesdames S. Baigent and T. Scott; refreshments, Mesdames L. Henwood, L. Thrupp, T. .White, Honiss, and Misses Grey and Schmidt. Mrs L. Young was in charge of the raffles, Mrs J. A. Walker the hoop-la, and Mrs Swaby the magic pump. The cooking competitions resulted as follows :— Bread, Mrs S. S. Murray 1, Mrs Byrn 2 ; plain sponge, Mrs Peat 1, Mrs Glasgow 2 ; shortbread, Sister Sheridan 1 ; plain scones, Mrs Burfoot ; fancy scones, Mrs J. H. Johnson ; fancy sponge, Miss Burfoot 1, Mrs S. S. Murray 2 ; sponge roll, Mrs J. Schmidt 1. In the raffles the results were as follows :— No. 1 table centre, No. 53, Miss A. Bowen ; No. 2 table centre, No. 76, Mrs P. R. Henry ; No. 1 cushion, No. 25, Mrs J. Wallace ; No. 1 suppercloth, No. 108, Miss A. Nisbet; No. 2 supper-cloth, No. 66, Miss A. Hill; dressed doll, No. 113, Pattie Harper, Auckland ; No. 1. d’oyley, No. 17, Mrs J. H. Johnson ; No. 2 d’oyley, No. 23, Rev. D. Maddison ; No. 3 d’oyley, No. 3, Mrs J. Wallace. The length of the rod was Bft 7Sin, and Mr T. White’s estimate was Bft 7Jin. The winners o f the nail-driving competitions were Mrs E. A. Murray and Mr F. Marshall.
