Owing to the inclemency of the weather the opening of the Paeroa Swimming Club, which was to take place this evening, has been postponed until next Friday, November 22.
It now takes £1 12s Id on the average to purchase what could have been purchased for Jtl in July, 1914.
A public cooking demonstration will be given by the Thames Valley Electric Power Board next Monday and Tuesday in the board’s showrooms, Behnont Road, Paeroa. The demonstration hours will be from 10 a.m, to 12 noon, and from 1.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is an. excellent opportunity for the ladies of Paeroa to see and sample electrical cooking. A demonstration is also to be given in the Public Hall, Ngatea, on Wednesday, the 20th inst.
The following building permits have been granted by the Borough Council since its October meeting : W. H. Taylor, to construct, petrol tank on Ohinemuri County Council’s property ; W. H. Taylor, to effect improvements to Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s property; permit to erect a dwelling, Junction Road, for Mrs H. C. Hansen ; W. Marshall, to make alterations to shop of D. Leach, Belmont Road. The value of the above permits amounts to £1934.
At a meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High School on Tuesday night a resolution of appreciation of her services while head mistress of the school was passed to Miss K. V. O’Grady.
On Sunday evening, at St. Paul’s Church, Captain Watson will deliver an address chiefly on the subject of the duplex envelope system, of which he is the inventor.
At the Borough Council meeting last evening Cr. H. J. Hare suggested that as people passing through Paeroa had no indication of where the municipal swimming baths were, some sort of notices should be erected. The Mayor considered that if anything was done in the matter, it would be best to pain “Paeroa Municipal Swimming B,ath” right across the fence on Normanby Road. It was decided to refer the suggestion to the baths committee to go into the question of cost.
A cup has been presented by Mr J. McLean for a hand-reared calf of any breed, calved since June 1, 1929, to be led by a boy or a girl under 15 years of age at the Hauraki A. and P. Association’s Show at Paeroa on December 5. The event is open to suppliers of the Te Aroha Dairy Co., Ltd. Entries close on November 27. Further particulars will be found in the advertising columns.
The domain superintendent, in a report submitted to the Borough Council last night, drew attention to the state of the footpaths in the Domain. They were beginning to show signs of wear, and in places were cracking. He suggested that they be given a light coat of tar or bitumen. He also suggested that if, when the paths were being tarred, a little extra tar was used on the numerous cracks which had appeared on the tennis courts, it would have a beneficial effect, both in the matter of appearance and in the saving of time. During last week he had spent half a day in removing the weeds which had grown on the courts. The council decided to refer the matter of the paths to the domain committee.
The £250 prize free skill competitian appearing in this week’s issue of the "N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” has arroused keen interest, and intending competitors will find the racing notes invaluable when making selections. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s carnival at Riccarton has a brilliant showing of superb racing incidents, and the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring fixture is also illustrated. The double centre pages are an attractive jumble of items from everywhere, while the visit of Britain’s Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, to America is covered in interesting snapshots.
