PLAINS ABATTOIR.

QUESTION OF AREA. SETTLERS PROTEST. Considerable correspondence came before the Hauraki Plains County Council at its meeting yesterday concerning the protest by the settlers of the Waitakaruru, Pipiroa, and Mangatarata districts against the decision <>f the council to include those areas in the Hauraki Plains abattoir area. This was from the Department of Agriculture, which forwarded three big petitions and a letter from a firm of Thames solicitors, and in a covering letter’ asked the council to reply to each of the assertions made. Cr. Hale said that as the solicitor’s letter and the three petitions bristled with suggestions of influence having been brought to bear on councillors, and many of the statements bordered on slander, he would suggest that the Director of the Department of Agriculture be invited to send an investigator to the district to clear up the good name of councillors. Cr. Parfitt said that the department had already sent ap officer to the district, and he had made inquiries from settlers. It was decided to incorporate in the reply an invitation on the lines suggested by Cr. Hale. A reply of considerable length which had been drafted by the clerk was approved.
