PAEROA BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. At the monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council on Thursday the Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, presided over the following : Crs. P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, H. M. Shand, and Mr W. C. Alexander, town clerk. Municipal Conference. The Municipal Association of New Zealand gave notice that the next annual conference of delegates of affiliated municipalities and town boards would be held at Invercargill, coming on March 5. All remits are to be in the hands of the secretary by November 25. It was agreed to let the letter lie on the table, remits, if any, to be brought forward at the next meeting of the council. Foreign Machinery. The Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote anent cases where plant and equipment had been ordered from Great Britain, under the impression that it would be manufactured there, whereas it was found that the plant was of foreign origin. The suggestion made by His Majesty’s Trade (Commission was that, in order to prevent a repetition of such cases, it might be advisable for a local body to specify in all cases that the country of origin of such plant, machinery or equipment ordered from Great Britain should be definitely stated by the tenderers. The executive committee was entirely in accord with this suggestion, and decided to bring it to the notice of all local bodies, with a view to taking action on the lines indicated. The Mayor considered that all would concur with the sentiments embodied in the letter. It was not likely that the council would be importing machinery, but he thought all would be in favour of the suggestion. The letter was received. Reduction of Rents. A. and J. Purdie, Puke Road, asked as a result of the Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill, that their properties, being farming land, be allowed reduction of rates. On the motion of Cr. Flatt it was decided to inform the writers that the applications could not be dealt with this year, but would be considered with the new valuation next year. Ngahina Wharf. The assistant engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa, advised that the lease at present held by the council expired on December 31 next. The Public Works Department was agreeable to an extension of the lease for a further term of five years, at a rental of £3OO per annum, the lease to be on the same terms and conditions as at present.
The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Crs. Hare and Silcock to negotiate with the Public Works Department with power to act. Commerce Train. The business agent of the N.Z. Railways, Auckland, wrote stating that arrangements in regard to the visit of the 1929 commercial train to Paeroa were completed. He was interested to read the -newspaper accounts of what had happened in Paeroa in connection with the visit, and would discuss it on his next visit to Paeroa. The Mayor stated that the business agent had made the visit intimated. The Hauraki Plains County Council and Paeroa Chamber of Commerce were joining with the council to entertain the visitors in Paeroa. For the trip across the Plains the Pokeno Chamber of Commerce had the matter of supplying cars in hand. Paeroa might have to send a few cars to Ngatea. Everything would be done to make the visit the success every member of the council desired it to be.
