PIPIROA FERRY.
A MISLEADING STATEMENT. ESTIMATE OF REVENUE. The following is taken from the monthly report, presented on Thursday last, to the Hauraki Plains County Council by its treasurer, Mr E, A. Mahoney :— “A statement has neen published in the Hauraki Advertiser, issued by the Thames Star Co., that the receipts from the Pipiroa ferry average £2OO monthly, and that the estimated gross revenue from the ferry is £2400 for the year. This statement is inaccurate, and somewhat misleading to the travelling public and ratepayers, who are so interested in the ferry at the present time. The amount of receipts estimated for the year in the annual estimates was £l6OO. The total receipts for the half-year ended September 30 was £B4l 1555 9d.
“No doubt the holiday traffic will somewhat enhance the next halfyear’s takings, but on the other hand a reduction in charges operates from October 1. Also, loss of revenue through possible breakdown must be taken into consideration, as well as renewals and repairs, which have been escaped during the first part of the year. The surplus from the ferry was £652 last year, and to publish a statement that this surplus is to be doubled in the following year, despite a reduction in charges, seems a somewhat optimistic view to take.”
