BOROUGH COUNCIL REPORT.
COMMITTEE’S SUGGESTIONS.
The Baths Committee’s report, presented to the Borough Council last night, suggested that providing the weather was suitable the 1929-30 season commence on Saturday (to-mor-row). Bath hours the same as last season were recommended, including the three late nights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the late night hours to come into force the second week in November.
Concerning hours for ladies only—--3.15 p.m. to 4.15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the report stated that these hours were taken very little advantage of. Frequently no person used the bath, and sometimes only one or two, so it was recommended that the above hours on Tuesday only be retained for ladies only, those on Thursday being retained for mixed bathing.
Concerning the periods set aside for men only, from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the committee considered that it would be an advantage to change these hours to mixed bathing, and recommended that this change be adopted. The report continued that there was a good deal of work to do in the bath and surroundings, and it was suggested that the custodian be employed at custodian’s wages for this week cutting grass and cleaning up generally. Also, the bath must be thoroughly scrubbed and the bottom again painted with lime. It was recommended that last year’s bath custodian should be again appointed on similar terms as last season.
The Paeroa Swimming Club asked that it be granted Tuesday and Thursday as club nights, under the same conditions as during the past season. In asking for two nights it asked the council to consider that this season it would be the club’s earnest endeavour to place club competitions on a sound footing, introduce the sport of water polo, teach life-saving, and hold regular instructional classes for all members. The first and fourth of these would necessitate the setting aside of one club night, and the second and third would not be possible unless another night could be granted. The committee wished to place on record its appreciation of the assistance given to the club by the Paeroa Borough Council during the past season.
Wednesdays and Fridays.
The Mayor suggested that in view of the committee’s report the two nights requested could not be agreed to, but Wednesday and Friday lights could be reserved for the club during the council’s pleasure. This proviso was necessary as the general public might wish a change of day. The Mayor’s suggestion was agreed to.
The Mayor also intimated that the council wished to aid the club in every way possible.
