TROUT FISHING.
GOOD PROSPECTS IN OHINEMURI HIKUTAIA STREAM DOOMED. The fishing season opened on October 1 with excellent weather, and the streams are in good fishing order. The best bag for the week-end was thirteen fish for two days, caught in the Waitawheta, and ranging from 11b to 4ilb in weight. Most of the anglers on this stream were successful with catches from one to four fish each. The Komata stream is in good order, and fishermen report fair catches. Mr Leach, secretary of the local club, reports that he fished the Hikutaia stream and landed four fish after a really good day’s sport. Fishing in this stream will, unfortunately, soon be at an end. The Ohinemuri Gold Mining Co. expects to commence crushing very shortly, and the cyanide and silt will destroy the fish, except in three tributaries where the fish, of course, will be safe.
Altogether, owing to the absence of floods, the various streams have never been in better trim, and fishermen can look, forward to a good season. Although it is impossible to obtain big bags such as are obtained in other places, the local streams, especially the Waitawheta, have a charm of their own. Bush-clad hills and ravines, gorgeous ferns, and beautiful falls and ripples all add to the joy of a day’s fishing and make for an ideal outing.
