SALE OF WORK.
FUNCTION AT TURUA.
CAKE- AND CANDY SALE.
A successful cake and candy sale organised by the ladies of the Tuura Presbyterian Church in aid of Church funds, was held on the stage of the Turua Hall on Thursday afternoon last. The attendance was very satisfactory, and brisk business was done.
Mesdanies J. G. Miller, S. G. Williams, and S. S. Murray were in charge of the cake stall, where, besides all the entries for the cooking competitions, there were numerous other cakes offered for sale. Mrs J. C. Miller had the candy stall, and Miss Dale the flower stall, while the bring and buy stall, on behalf of the Sunday School, was in the charge of Mrs J. Robertson.
A flying visit from Auckland to open the sale was made by the Rev. A. Nicholls, who until recently was in charge of the Presbyterian Church work on the Hauraki Plains. ’ In the cooking competitions Mrs S. W. Bagnall awarded the prizes as follows :—
Bread : Mrs S. S. Murray, 1 and 2. fruit cake, Mrs J. Laws 1 ; Madeira cake, Mrs J. Bowen 1 ; jam roll, Miss Gray 1 ; scones, Mrs Burfoot 1 ; sponge with butter, Mrs S. S. Murray 1, Miss R. Williams 2 ; sponge without butter, Mrs J. G. Miller 1, Miss E. Gi;ay 2 ; shortbread, Mrs J. Flynn 1. In a competition for the weight of a cake Mesdames J. G. Miller and S. G. Williams tied with entries of 91b loz, which was half an ounce above the correct weight. This sale was the first of a number of money-making functions, the next being a social at the residence of Mrs S. W. Bagnall in a fortnight’s time.
