RUGBY UNION DANCE.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The Paeroa Rugby Union held its annual dance and euchre tournament on Friday night. The affair was fully successful from every point of view, the hall being filled with merry dancers and the stage with keen euchre players. The hall was effectively decorated with many-hued streamers, the scheme being a combination of all the union’s club’s colours—white and black (West), yellow and black (East), red (Suburbs), and black (Pirates) —with the Irish green of the Paeroa Rugby Union predominating in the centre.

After a most enjoyable supper the Mayor of Paeroa, Mr W. Marshall, in the course of an appropriate speech thanked the ladies who had carried out the supper arrangements and all those who had aided to make the event a succes, and mentioned the union’s appreciation of those who donated the euchre prizes. Mr Marshall paid a special tribute to the orchestra, who had given their services gratis. Touching on the season’s affairs, His Worship said that the union had experienced a successful season, and he hoped that through its endeavours this season it would be able to stage home and home matches next year with neighbouring unions outside the Thames Valley district. Mr Marshall presented the trophies won during the past season as follows: Senior competition, McCullay Shield, Suburbs, received by T. Killgour. Junior Cup, East, received by W. Ashcroft. Third-grade Cup, Suburbs, received by E. L. Shaw. Drysdale Cupi, senior knock-out, East, received by A. McQuarters. Williams Cup, East, received by W. Holwell. Mr E. L. Shaw, on behalf of Suburbs, paid a tribute to Mr E. Turner, who had done so much for the good of the game not only at Hikutaia for Suburbs, but throughout the whole district for the union.

Mr Marshall also presented the following euchre prizes : Ladies, Ist, Mrs Fisher, Thames ; 2nd, Mrs Mead, Karangahake ; 3rd, Mrs Pascoe ; booby prize, Mi-s Robertson, Thames. Men, Ist, Mr H. Verran ; 2nd, Mrs Boden ; 3rd, Mr Boyer; booby prize, Mr Glover.

That the whole affair was such an outstanding success was in no small measure due to the joint secretaries, Messrs W. A. Fathers and D. Fraser, to whom the greatest of credit is due for their untiring efforts.
