RIFLE SHOOTING.

PAEROA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. The opening of the third season of the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club took place on the local rifle range on Saturday in glorious weather. There was a good attendance of members and visitors. The president of the club, Captain F. C. Hubbard, formally opened the season by calling upon Mrs H. Simmonds to fire the first shot, the result being signalled a bulls-eye amidst applause from the onlookers. The members then fired in a sweepstake match at 200yds and 500yds. The new 7J-inch bull at 200yds and 15-inch bull at 500 were used, these being smaller than those in use formerly. The results of the shooting were as follows :—

Captain Simmonds, 33 at 200yds, 32 at 500yds, total 65 ; Rfm. H. A. Morrison, 32, 30—62 ; Rfm. E. Mead, 29. 31—60 ; Dep. President R. I. Wells, 30, 29 —59 ; Rfm. A. A. Jenkinson, 27, 31—58 ; Rfm. R. I. Roberts, 28, 28— 56 ; Rfm. H. W. Morrison, 31, 25 —56; President F. C. Hubbard, 31, 25—56 ; Rfm. L. Morris, 32, 24—56 ; Rfm. W. A. Reid, 27, 28—55 ; Rfm. D. Currie, 29, 26—55 ; Rfm. E. Turton, 30, 24— 54 ; Rfm. R. W. Roberts, 29, 24—53 ; Rfm. R. Fraser, 24, retired 24. Afternoon tea was served at the 500yds mound, and the president took the opportunity of welcoming the visitors, amongst whom were several ladies, to the range. He stated that it had been decided that a separate day should be set aside for the entertainment of neighbouring clubs. To the members of the club he hoped the club would continue to progress it had done up to the present, and that every member would make a special effort to enter for open competition at the various prize meetings, and even if they did not win, the experience to be gained would be very valuable to them.
