A CORRECTION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —May I, as a friend of the provincial Press, defend it against the incorrect statement of the Mayor of Paeroa in connection with a report of a discussion by the Borough Council concerning the entertainment of the railway commerce train party. In your issue of September 18 Mr Marshall at a meeting to revive the Chamber of Commerce is reported as saying : “DeSpite the remarks made at the council meeting the council had unanimously decided to welcome th* visitors, and a committee had actually been set up then and there to go into arrangements. This fact the local paper had reported, but the provincial Press had omitted it, giving an entirely erroneous and harmful impression.” In the “Gazette’s” report of the Borough Council meeting it is stated : “The Mayor then suggested a committee consisting of Crs. Bray, Hare, and Flatt be appointed to go into the arrangements for the visit,” and, later, “In the end the committee proposed by the Mayor was agreed to.”

In the report of the same discussion by the Auckland niorning daily, which, by the way, was represented at the meeting, it is stated : “The Mayor suggested that Messrs Bray, Hare, and Flatt be appointed a committee to assist in the entertainment of the party,” and, later, “Finally the suggestion of the Mayor to appoint a spe- • cial committee to entertain the party was adopted.” These statements, placed side by side, prove conclusively that the Mayor’s charge against the provincial Press, which must include the city newspapers, was certainly not founded on fact. Furthermore, His Worship is sometimes a trifle inconsistent. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting he said, “It was a great pity that the report of what had occurred had been published in the Press.” Practically in the next breath he said that publication of the report was “a blessing in disguise.” Mr Marshall is, therefore, under a debt of gratitude to the provincial as well as the local Press. PROVINCIAL.
