THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL

The West Football Club will hold its annual dance and euchre tournament at the Gaiety Theatre to-night.

On the plan of Hauraki Plains accompanying the 1929 report of the Lands Drainage Department’s operations the name of “village” is given to Patetonga, Tahuna, and Kaihere, while Turua is styled a township and Kerepeehi and Pipiroa are called towns. The location of Ngatea is shown, but no designation has been given it.

A fast trip was made by a number of Thames residents on a recent Saturday from Thames to Auckland. From leaving Pollen Street to arriving at Eden Park the time taken was just a trifle over two hours 16 minutes. It is understood that the record is two hours five minutes from the Thames South Post Office to the Auckland Post Office.

Mr H. J. Harris, of Hikutaia, left yesterday for the National Show and Sale, at Hamilton, where he will have on view and for sale some of his famous Romani breed of Jerseys. With such fine cattle as Mr Harris’ to be purchased locally, there is little need for Jersey lovers to look further afield when desirous of purchasing thoroughbred producers.

To-night’s entertainment for members of the Paeroa Defence Miniature Rifle Club will be a handicap competition for a trophy donated by the Paeroa Hardware Co. (Mr D. Prime).

The principal works being carried out by the Lands Drainage Department on the Hauraki Plains during the current financial year are stated in the annual report to Parliament to be as follows : Piako River dredging and stop-banking ; continuation of the Waitakaruru-Maukoro canal; continuation of Elstow-Awaiti flood protection, drainage, and roadwork; construction of stop-bank on the southern boundary of the Kerepeehi block.; construction of drainage canal on the Pouarua Road reserve ; the completion of the metalling of the Nga-tea-Kaihere road, and the continuation of the Patetonga main road metalling.

The 30ft telegraph poles along the side of the main street opposite the post office are being removed to make way for 35ft ones. These taller poles are being erected to carry the Thames Valley Power Board’s power lines. At present the board’s main wires run along only one side of the street, and the current is fed to buildings across the way by unsightly and awkward feeder wires. With the instalment of the new poles finished, the necessity for this will be obviated, as main wires will run on that side as well. Underneath these will run the main telegraph linos and those of a few telephone subscribers. It it expected that the work will be completed well before Christmas.

Details of the special works undertaken on the Hauraki Plains last winter to provide relief for unemployment are given in the annual report of the Lands Drainage Engineer. Over a period of six months 92 men were employed planting 568 acres of flax, felling 278 acres of scrub, and sowing 551 acres of grass seed, and also on road and drainage work. The area planted with flax was low-lying land near the Kaihere wharf which could not be economically protected, from flooding. Flax plants that would have been destroyed by construction work were transplanted, and additional plants were obtained by thinning out in swamp areas where there was a thick natural growth. The transplanted flax wks now well established, and the potential value appeared to fully justify the planting of additional areas of waste land.

To-morrow a start will be made by the Lands Drainage Department with the laying of the top course of metal on the Ngatea-Kaihere road.
