Drains under the control of the Lands Drainage Department on the Hauraki Plains measuring 134 miles 14 chains were cleaned by manual labour, and. in the construction of five miles of new drains and the improvement of 18 miles 49 chains of old drains spoil to the extent of 43,023 cubic yards was shifted during the year ended March 31 last. Floating and land dredges shifted 619,911 cubic yards of spoil in the construction of canals and stop-banks, and in the improvement of canals and the Piako River channel, at a cost of 6.54 d per cubic yard.
