The Paeroa school having averaged an attendance of over 361 pupils for the last three terms, is now in the category of a sixth-grade school, and from the new year will be entitled to a permanent extra teacher, instead of the temporally one now attached.

In the Waitawheta.stream last week Mr W. T. Routledge, chief ranger of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, released 40,000 trout ova. They were brought moist in trays from the hatcheries at Rotorua, transferred to water in buckets, and then to a sandy, stony part of the stream in about a foot of water by means of a pipe.

At the weekly meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union held last evening, September 21 was decided upon as the date for the Railways v. Public Works Department match in the Sprague Shield competition. The Tauranga Rugby Union advised that it would be unable to arrange any date with Paeroa this year, but hoped that the two unions would come to some arrangement to play home and home games early next season. The committee last evening placed the suggestion on record as a recommendation to the incoming committee.

At the Paeroa Warden’s Court on Monday prospecting licenses were granted to S. A. Shaw over the old 15 acres special T.G.L. dredging claim at Waikino, and to S. J. Nichols over 100 acres at Mackaytown, comprising the old Golden Giant claim. The rising Sun Gold Mining Co., Ltd., was granted a duplicate tramway license to replace one lost.

Mr Judd, chairman of the N.Z. Cooperative Pig Marketing Association, will deliver an address on his new capitalisation scheme at the Ngatea Public Hall to-morrow evening.

There will be no ladies’ hockey matches played at the domain to-mor-row.

It is expected that crushing will shortly be- underway at the Maratoto mine, and that the results will be very satisfactory to all concerned.

During the last four weeks no less than 4900 bobby calves have been waybilled from Paeroa, the actual weekly shipments being 1000, 1100, 1500, and 1300 for last week.

A complimentary dinner was tendered to Mr jA. M. Samuel, M.P., at Cambridge on Saturday by the master, Mr Wynn Brown, and committee of the Waikato Hunt. The function was held to mark appreciation of the interest in the hunt displayed by Mr Samuel over a lengthy period, and also the assistance given by him to the executive. About 60 representatives of the hunt and sporting interests in the Waikato were present.

In connection with the representative football match, Thames v. Tauranga, to be held at Tauranga on Saturday next, a special train is being run from Thames North to Tauranga and back. Details of train times and special day excursion fares are advertised by the Railway Department in this issue.

The Waikato Carbonisation Co., with a capital of £150,000, has been registered. The object of the company is the carbonisation of slack coal, the extraction of the bye-pro-ducts, and the briquetting of the residue. No shares are being offered to the public, the capital being provided by the various coal mining companies. The works are to be at Rotowaro.

The Auckland City Club Rugby team will play Waihi at Waihi on Saturday, September 21.
