The savings banks of Australia on March 31 held savings totalling £216,300,000, representing an average of £44 14s Id for each of the 4,838,262 depositors, or £34 0s 6d a head of population (says a Sydney paper). The information is contained in the quarterly summary of statistics made available by the Commonwealth Statistician, Mr Wickens. The population of Australia increased during the first quarter of 1929 by 19,984, making the total of 6,536,770, excess of births over deaths accounting for all but 1178 of the increase. \ Statistics compiled from 376 unions showed that 10 per cent, of members were unemployed on June 29. During the quartei’ to the end of March 75 industrial disputes involved working days and £691,990 in wages. 44,223 workers, who lost 692,700 Sheep recorded at the close of last year totalled 106,115,100, the total wool production being estimated at 950,000,000 pounds.
