WAIHOU POLLUTION.

TE AROHA SEWAGE DISCHARGE.

VETO BY BOARD OF HEALTH.

The editorial on the pollution of the Waihou River which appeared in this paper on July 19 has been answered. The Hon. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, presided at a meeting of the Board of Health on Monday last and dealt with the subject as stated in a petition from Mangaiti settlers and in the editorial mentioned. It was decided to communicate with the Te Aroha Borough Council, calling upon it to cease discharging crude sewage into the river, and also that the department should obtain for the board a comprehensive report regarding the use and pollution of the river throughout its entire length.

On the motion of the chairman it was also decided to reply to the petitioners stating the action proposed to be taken by the board, but pointing out, in accordance with the report of the medical officer of health, that it was considered unsafe for settlers to use the waters of the river for domestic purposes.
