FOOTBALL.
NEXT SATURDAY’S MATCHES. SENIORS V. JUNIORS. Saturday’s game at the local domain should prove of great interest to Paeroa, for a battle royal is to be staged between the senior and junior representative teams of the Paeroa Rugby Union. CRITICISM OF PLAYERS.
(By “Onlooker.”)
The Paeroa-Waihi game witnessed last Saturday was a very poor exhibition of the code.
Thornton, the full-back for Waihi, was very safe, and had little to do. centre played a good game, and is also a good forward. The wing thfee-quarters were not very brilliant; Johns is a good goal-kicker. Dillimore did not show up much, and Saunders has played better, but was the best back on the Waihi side. Snodgrass played a fair game, but was not impressive. The Waihi pack did not play as well as was expected, the local forwards holding them safely. Rare, the Paeroa full-back, was very safe, but is an erratic line-kicker. McCollum, on the wing, did not get many chances. Wells, on the other wing, has plenty of pace and did some good work. Swann, at centre, played a good game, being about the best back on the Paeroa side. Catlin was very weak at five-eighths. McCollum, the other five-eighths, did a lot of stopping. He did not receive the best of treatment. Moore at half-back played a good game, but tried to do too much. He has a bad habit of running with the ball from the scrum instead of passing it to his five-eighths. The forwards played well. Neil and Henderson made a good front row. Page was prominent in the loose, but is apparently shy in the tight stuff, where he would be more useful; he also is becoming a chronic offsider. Carrick was the best forward on the field, and is improving with each game. Nield at rover ha’d a lot to do, and held his own with Price, who is recognised as the best rover in the Thames Valley.
