BOWLING.
THE PAEROA CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The 25th annual meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club was held on Friday evening last, when Mr J. W. Silcock, president, presided over a fair attendance of members.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the annual statement of accounts and the balance-sheet were adopted. Some discussion took place on the large amount of the Borough Council’s account. Mr Silcock said the domain superintendent had spent 150 hours more on the green than he had the year previously. One amount was for insurance of the pavilion, which the club paid to the council, and it in return paid the insurance company.
Eventually Mr W. J. Towers voiced the opinion of the meeting by saying that the club ought to meet it gracefully and do its best to meet the account.
Mr Silcock added that a great deal had been done to the green, but it had not been as satisfactory as members had hoped for. Apparently the improvements had been started too late in the year, the top-dressing not having time before the dry weather came. However, the green would be better this year. Mr E. Edwards congratulated the executive on the long and comprehensive report which was before the members. It showed a successful and pleasant season and a satisfactory credit balance. Election of Officers.
The meeting then proceeded with the election of officers, which resulted as follows : Patron, Mr C. T. Mettam; president, Mr J. W. Silcock ; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs W. N. Chamberlain and L. Gibb ; committee, Messrs C. Holes, J. C. H. McDonald, and G. H. Taylor ; selection and match committee, Messrs L. Gibb, C. T. Mettam, and W. J. Towers ; delegates to 'South Auckland Centre and Goldfields Association, the president and Mr W. J. Towers ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. W. Brocket; hon. auditor, Mr C. Bassett.
Mr Silcock, in thanking the meeting for re-electing him as president, said he had not been anxious for another term. The only consideration which prompted him to agree was the large account to be met, which he did not like to leave as a legacy to someone else. There were other members just as capable as he : and they should have their turn. Personally he would like to see Mr Gibb president, and did not want to step in on another man’s term. As it was the meeting’s wish, he was prepared to take the position once more. He did not wish to leave the outstanding account to another man: funds might meet it, however.' The club would perhaps not be so strong in members this season. Last year they had gained a number, but this gain had been offset by a number leaving the district. Mr Silcock said he hoped the same conimittee would offer themselves for re-election. He sincerely thanked all the members of the club for their help, which had rendered his term quite a pleasure. The members elected to the various executive positions in turn thanked the meeting, and gave assurance of their wishes to further the interests of the club to the best of their ability. New Members. The following new members were elected : Captain G. D. Dittmer, M.C.. Messrs H. Follett, J. R. Kidd, G. Neil, and E. Thomas. Selectors. The question of electing a sole selector or a selection committee occupied some time. Mr Silcock, in announcing that Mr G. P. de Castro, who had acted in the former capacity last season, had intimated that he would be unable to accept any official office this year, said that Mr de Castro had pursued his duties as sole selector without fear or favour.
A selection committee of three was finally decided upon. Match Committee.
Mr Towers proposed the formation of a match committee, pointing out how unsatisfactory it was for players not to know until the last moment what games they were to play in. A match committee such as metropolitan clubs had would obviate this. After some discussion Mr Towers’ suggestion was carried, and the selection committee was elected to act inthe dual capacity. Competitions. The question of what rules the Brenan Shield competition should be played under required a great deal of investigation. The system in force during the past season having proved unsatisfactory, inquiries had been made of several Auckland clubs as to how .they conducted their full-rink competitions. After a full debate, in which both the percentage and aggregate systems were thoroughly gone into, the aggregate of games system was decided upon. It was further decided that all names should be in by 2 p.m. on the day of play, matches to commence at 2.15 p.m. Other Competitions. The meeting decided that the handicap paris should be played at straightout pairs. The A and B grade championships would be played under the two-life system, players to be classified into A and B grades by the selection committee and the names placed on the board as selected. Presentation of Trophies. After the conclusion of routine business Mr Silcock presented the Brenan Shield to Mr Carter, who received it on behalf of the team through the skip, Mr G. H. Taylor, being absent. Mr T. L. Williams received the A grade trophy, and Mr C. Pascoe the pairs, the other winners being absent. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chair, and the meeting adjourned for supper. The annual report was published in full in this paper last Wednesday.
