KNOCK-OUT COMPETITIONS. SATURDAY’S ARRANGEMENTS. Two knock-out finals are down for Saturday. In the seniors East and West will meet to do battle for the Drysdale Cup. West have already disposed of Pirates, who in their turn defeated Veterans, white East have a victory over Suburbs to their credit. To have defeated the club competition winners shows how materially East have improved since they first took the field this season, so West will have a hard proposition to face in a rejuvenated team. A sterling, wellfonght game ought to be the result. The East and West juniors also face each other in a knock-out game, the final for the Williams Cup. In this event there are no previous results to judge by. as West had a bye and Suburbs defaulted in. their game with East. The Pirates club, of course, has no juni.;r team. East won the junior club competition, but that does not mean to say by any manner of means that they can shelve West in a knockous.
Altogether, Paeroa with two knockout finals in one day is very fortunate and there should be a big gate to witness two such important games with four local teams involved. The West senior team will be chosen from the following: Fraser, Vause, Vercte, Wells, Verran. Swann, Poland, L. Nield, L. C. Masters, Beagley, Brown, Hamilton, Knight, Carrick, Taylor, Page, Henderson, and 'McKee.

Emergencies : Backs, Wickliffe, Gleeson, Moses; forwards, F. Williams, Bramley, L. Nealis. • THE PEACE CUP. Now that the Hamilton sub-union is the holder of the Peace Cup, it has been agreed to give Waipa and Cambridge a direct challenge for the trophy, the former being allotted September 7 and Cambridge September 21. The latter date is very late for Cambridge, but the club hopes to keep a team together. As there is every likelihood that Waipa will not take up their challenge, Cambridge will probably endeavour to secure the earlier date. t According to the agreement entered into by the sub-unions concerned, Piako by its defeat of Paeroa last Saturday now the competition, and has been offered September 25 or 28 as a date. The Piako team did not have such an easy win on Saturday as was expected, and will have to do much better when they play Hamilton for the Peace Cup. T. Goldsbury at full-back played a poor game, much below representative standard. His kicking and taking the ball lacked judgment Crowe and Reid, on the wings, both played fair games. N. Ifwersen was not very brilliant, and too much was expected from Karl, his brother, who did not get many chances. Rackham played well, being coached by Ifwersen most of the time. This player is good on attack but not too sound on defence. Nicholson at half-back had a lot to do, and opened the game up well after half-time. The pick of the forwards was Payne. He is a good man in the line-out and played a hard game. F. Goldsbury has played better games, and Mulgrew did not show up as he did when playing for the Thames Val--ley team. Rare at full-back for Paeroa has played better games. McCollum on the wing does not play with the same dash that he did at the start of the season. McNeil had no luck with him on Saturday, otherwise he may have scored at least two tries. McGarvey was patchy at times, but can play good football. Swann was the best back playing for Paeroa, and gave the opposition no chances. He had bad luck in getting hurt in the second half, and this stopped him quite a lot. A. C. McCollum had a lot to do at half-back, and played a sound game. He would have been better playing five-eighths. N. Neil played his best game this season, and made a difference in the front row. This player is good on defence. Fitch played a better game than usual, and was well supported by the rest. Carrick was the outstanding forward in the Paeroa pack, and had had luck in being tripped when in a nice handy position for scoring NOTES. £ Arrangements are being made for the high school football tean s in the Thames Valley to play a tournament after the school holidays, with the object of selecting a team to meet the Bay of Plenty high schools representative team, possibly at Tauranga.
