LOCAL UNEMPLOYED
SCHEME OF WORK PROCEEDING. EXCELLENT START MADE. The work within the borough which was made possible through the funds raised by the queen carnival is now well in hand. 1 A road ten fteet in breadth and of easy grade has been, formed- to the top of Primrose Hill, the first construction lorry ascending it yesterday. To-day a start will be made tj ejnvey to the top by truck materials for the building of the cenotaph. Excavations for the foundations will also begin to-day. A sited will be built near the site, so that as the blocks, cement, etc., are conveyed there they can be housed against the weather until actually required, thus avoiding any delays. Some 300 of the concrete blocks to be used in the construction of the cenotaph are ready waiting in the Borough Council yard for conveyance to the site, as well as parts of the mouldings. Work on th>; remaining blocks is proceeding apace, and these will be available when required.
The method of leaking these blocks is most interesting, and a visit to the yard, which is beside the fire station, is to be recommended. Once the actual foundations are finished, the erection of the cenotaph should be a rapid matter.
Great progress has been made with the piping and filling in of drains in Station Road, and a start has been made on the old Te Aroha road.
. Although no trees have as yet been actually planted, the ground at the various proposed places has been prepared.
A commencement with the Plunket and rest rooms will be made just as soon as the plans are completed. This should be within the next fortnight. The proposal provides for a brick building adjacent to the library and the continuation of the street facade right along the face of the library. Thus through the scheme the appearance of the somewhat dilapidated library will also be greatly improved. Eventually, when the necessary funds are available, it is the intention to brick round the whole of the library and demolish the old wooden building, which will thus have been enclosed.
