MAIL ROBBERY.

NETHERTON POST OFFICE. MAILBAGS STOLEN. A serious crime was committed at Netherton during the week-end, when two mailbags were stolen from the locked mail contained there. The first person to discover the fact was Mr W. Smith, a settler, who on Sunday afternoon, while gathering firewood along the riverbank, noticed an unusual-looking bag held up by rushes some 300 yards down-stream from the post office. On finding them to be mailbags, Mr Smith informed a mail carrier of his discovery. Examined by postal officials the bag was found to contain a smaller one, in which were numerous letters. One of these bags had contained mail from the Paeroa post office, and the other correspondence from the travelling post office. All the mail recovered has now been forwarded on to the addressees, but naturally it is impossible to estimate what is missing. although investigations have so far shown that no valuables have been stolen.

To aid in the investigation Detective Moon arrived in Paeroa yesterday, and he and Constable McClinchy have matters in hand and are making extensive inquiries.
