NETHERTON DRAINAGE
MEETING OF BOARD. The Netherton Drainage Board held its monthly meeting at Netherton on Friday, Mr G. Buchanan presiding over'Messrs J. A. Reid, F. T. V. Johnson, B. Halligan, and the clerk, Mr J. E. Green. ; Wirihana East Drain. In reply to a letter from the clerk advising the board’s intention to clean the drain running at the back of the properties of Messrs Broad, Mills, . Reid, Kean, and Hayward to the H drain, but stating that before this could, be done it would be necessary for the settlers to remove the blackberry from that part of their properties traversed by the ‘drain, ’ failing which the work would be done at the settlers’ cost, letters were received from Mr S. Hayward and Mr W. J. Broad advising that their sections of the drain had been cleared of blackberry. Mr Reid reported that Mr Broad had made a very good job of his drains. All the settlers had cleared the blackberry, and'a contract for improving the drain had been let. However, the work done had been very unsatisfactory. and the contractor had been sent back. The speaker said he thought that the drain could be deepened in places, and this would give an excellent outlet. It was decided to name the dram the Wirihana East, after the name of the block, and' to compliment Mr Broad on the nature of the work he had dqne. ' Contribution to Works. On the motion of Mr Reid it was decided that Mr G. Death be informed /that the board was prepared to make him a‘ contribution towards the cost of cleaning and improving his stopbank .drain on condition he agreed to do from the flood-gate to Mr Gbble’s boundary. , ,' . On the question of a nearby drain, the matter of assessing the value of cleaning the drain between the properties of Messrs G. Death and A. Vowles to the land of Mr Gillard’s was left to Mr J. A. Reid to apportion. By-laws. The printing of the board’s by-laws by the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” company,, the lowest tenderers, was agreed to. Rates. The general rates were made, in accordance with the advertised intenMr Reid pointed out that in its first term the board had struck its general rate over !he whole area, whereas now it was keeping the accounts for the various subdivisions separate. He therefore wished to know what became of the unexpended , balance oi the first general rate collected. The clerk explained that the subdivisions had had the sums due to them credited to their separate accounts. The cost of forming the board, etc., had been apportioned on a valuation basis, and full details of the works had been kept, with a view to the adoption of subdivision accounts. Pekapeka Area. Mr Reid drew attention to the fact that the board had not inspected the drainage of the Northern area, as had been decided upon. There had been several wet days, and: noting had been done. The area member, Mr Buchanan, stated that the matter had been looked into a fortnight ago by Mr Johnson, Mr Halligan,. and himself . It had been found that good drainage was possible for Mr G. Sarjants, iunr., land through the Pekapeka outlet except for the fact that there was a big slip in .the Hauraki United Board’s outlet on the day of the inspection, and the flood-gate was blocked open. The matter of transferring the area to the Hauraki Board had been dealt with at the previous meeting, and would come up for discussion by the Hauraki Board at its next meeting. Accounts. Accounts totalling £l2 6s, 8d were passed for payment.
