FARMERS’ UNION.
THE NGATEA BRANCH. MONTHLY MEETING. The Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting on Wednesday afternoon last, Mr C. W. Schultz. presiding. Time of Meetings. It wa’s agreed that in future meetings be held at 1.30 p.m. instead of at 8 p.m. Finance. The provincial secretary advised that the branch had 25 financial members, and the amount due to the branch was £6 5s less 12s 6d for stationery supplied. It was decided to ask that this money be forwarded immediately, and the secretary was instructed to interview those farmers who were shown on the list as unfinancial Visit of Experts. In reply to the invitation of the branch Mr R. Lindsay Robb, of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., of London, wrote agreeing to inspect soil and deliver a lecture on fertilisers and their use to Hauraki Plains farmers,' but suggested that the visit be deferred until the return from Australia of Dr. Annett, of Matangi, who would accompany him. The secretary’s action in asking them to appoint their own date and to give him a week’s notice to enable farmers to be notified, was approved. Boys for Farms. The Auckland Chamber' of Commerce forwarded details of a scheme for placing city boys desiring farm employment in touch with farmers desiring assistance. A supply of application forms were also forwarded. It was agreed to co-operate in every way. Abattoirs. In reply to the request by the branch for assistance in the matter of securing dn abattoir for the county the director of the Live Stock Division wrote advising that the matter was one for the. local authority. After a long discussion on the pro-, posal of Hauraki Meat Co., Ltd., to establish abattoirs at Ngatea it was decided to write to the County Council asking for information, and pointing out the necessity of preventing pollution of the Piako River. The Tariff Board. A resolution from the Cambridge branch, endorsed by the Auckland Privincinl . Executive,.. expressing strong objection to the'setting up of a Tariff Board and the opinion that all matters of tariff should be dealt with by Parliament was supported, and it was decided to forward a copy to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Customs, and the two local members of Parliament. The following motion was also carried and ordered to be sent to the same people : “That the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union protests against the continuation of a protective Customs tariff and a protective railway tariff, the whole cost of which falls upon the primary producer, and requests the Government to remove all protection of all nature from all goods whatsoever. C.O.D. System. Similar action was decided upon with a resolution protesting at the action of the Government in abolishing the cash on delivery system for parcels exchanged between New Zealand and Great Britain.
