PIRATES V. WEST. In cold, disagreeable weather, with a treacherous ground, • the following teams took the field 35 minutes late in the knock-out competition for the Drysdale Cup • — West.—Verran, Vercoe, Swann, J. Verran, Poland. Fraser, Hale. Neil, Henderson, McKee, Brown, Carrick, Williams. Vause, Currie. Pirates.—Bax, McCollum, Goonan, Coldicutt, Tukukino, A. C. McCollum, Saunters, Pearcey, Saunders, Tomich, Wynyard, Ratcliff, Gibson, Peke. West kicked off. Tight play veered from one end of the field to the other, footwork predominating, the slippery ball making handling a tricky business. Pearcey and Peke led a, rush by Pirates forwards well into West’s twenty-five. Verran nicked up the ball, but Peke brought him down and the ball went out. Carrick in possession put in a splendid short run, but there was no one to take his pass. A minute later the same player, dribbled the ball over the line for Currie, who was in close support, to score. Swann converted. West 5, Pirates 0. Immediately after the change-over Pirates charged down the field in an irresistible rush, Goonan going over near the corner. The kick failed. West 5, Pirates 3. A. C. McCollum started the best attempt at a back movement so far, Bax joining in,' but the effort was spoilt by the greasy ball. Verran, in the face of a threatening rush, marked close to the posts, his kick relieving the danger. Saunders went to full-back, Bax’ taking up his usual position. Swann led the backs, but McCollum intercepted a pass and broke up the movement. At the sounding of the whistle West were attacking. The teams changed straight over, foregoing the , interval. Carrick at halfway started the backs off on the prettiest passing movement of the day, which took West clean up the field. Swann handled last and punted, following up to score although blatently fouled by a Pirates man push-, ing him in the back. The kick was low. West 8, Pirates 3. Both fullbacks were playing good, sound’ games, their handling of the leaden; greasy ball being splendid under the circumstances. Bax got away on a fine individual effort,, only to slither into toiich.
The beginning of the last 'quarter saw Pirates attacking strongly, and West forced. McCollum dashed away, but with the slippery conditions he could not keep his feet, A forward rush near West’s line gave Pirates their chance, and McCollum crossed the line well out. The kick failed. West 8, Pirates 6. The end came with stalemate play, both teams defending strongly in turns. The game, if not spectacular or brilliant, was well fought and well played as far as was possible under the very adverse circumstances.
In the other.knock-out competition match East defeated Suburbs, the champion 'team in the club competition, by 16 points to 6. .PRIMARY SCHOOL FOOTBALL.. FLEMING SHIELD COMPETITION. In the Fferhing Shield match Piako v. Paeroa, at Te Aroha, on Saturday the home team gained a victory by 8 points to 3.
