HOCKEY.

AUSTRALIAN TEAM AT THAMES. THAMES-HAURAKI DEFEATED. The game opened with a rush by Thames-Hauraki, who had a good opportunity of scoring in the first few minutes of the game. Australia cleared, and after give and take play Nettleton scored for the visitors with a well directed goal. Play continued from end to end, both teams being hard hitters, until Nettleton scored again for Australia. Thames Hauraki pressed, but seldom got past the Australian backs, who played a sound game, the Australian goalkeeper having practically nothing to do. The combination of the Australians was good throughout the game, and in a. great many encounters had the local players baffled. Connie scored the third goal for Australia, and from then bn it was just a question of how many goals Australia would win by. game wore on Nettleton shot another two goals and Fitzpatrick and Pulley one each, the game ending with Australia the winners by seven goals to nil. For the home team L. Candy played a good game, and Griffin played well in goal ; but for him the score would have been much higher. On many occasions he cleared with foot and stick in great style. The Australians were very smart in trapping the ball, and a pass meant for a Thames-Hauraki player very seldom reached him. On the whole the. game was disappointing from a ..spectator's point of view in t‘.-et Thames-Hauraki was inferior to .Australia. LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The two friendly matches played between Hikutaia and Paeroa ladies’ teams at tfye Domain on Saturday were very evenly contested, both games resulting in a draw. In the Rovers v. Hinemoa match both sides netted one goal each, Miss A. O’Neil scoring for the former and Miss G. Ellis for the latter. In the Wanderers v. Pioneers no score resulted. . .! HAURAKI PLAINS MATCHES.
