A SMART ARREST.
DETECTIVES’ QUICK WORK. STOLEN FIVE POUNDS. A smart arrest was recently made by Detectives Thompson and White at Hamilton (says the “Times”). A hotel employee complained that he had had £5 stolen from his room. Within 20 minutes the two detectives had arrested the culprit, who was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. The thief was apprehended as he was about to board a service car for Auckland, and he stoutly denied his guilt, and his innocence was somewhat borne out by the fact that on being searched he had only a few shillings in his possession. Apparently having, been warned that he might be held suspect, he had gone to another hotel, where, in conversation with an acquaintance with whom he drank, he handed the latter a pocket handkerchief, asking him to take it over to the 11 o’clock service car, and to hand it to him as jthe car left. Inside the handkerchief was the stolen £5. * The detectives had to work swiftly, and within 20 minutes they had the man and the money in their possession.
