The Government bonus payable by the Department of Agriculture for the beaks of keas has been reduced from 5s to 2s 6d each.
The Paeroa Defence Miniature Rifle Club this evening will fire the first shoot of the three-night handicap competition. Only two of these shoots will count in the aggregate, thus allowing members to throw out their worst one, and also to allow any member to miss a night and still be in the competition. An entrance fee of Is is to be charged for the whole competition. A trophy will be awarded to the winner.
The butter-fat supplied to the Te Aroha Dairy Co. for the month of June, 1929, was 57,8021 b, an increase of 30 per cent, on the total for June, 1928, of 44,5091 b. Payment was made on July 15 at the rate of Is 5d per lb for first grade, net cash farm gate.
The unveiling of the Pengakawa (near Te Puke) war memorial will be performed to-day by Lieut-Colonel J. E. Duigan, D. 5.0., Chief Staff Off cer, Northern Command. A guard of honour, will be. provided, and there will be a parade of returned soldiers. Many visitors are expected.
The Hikutaia Tennis Club held its annual dance in the local hall on Thursday evening last. There was a large number present, and the club’s funds should benefit by an additional £8 10s or £9. Music was supplied by the K Boys, of Thames, while Messrs E. Elliot and H. McGarvey acted as M’s.C. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs W. Alley and Mrs Fisher, of Thames, and the Monte Carlo waltz by Miss Crowley and Mr Woodruff.
Particulars of train arrangements and the issue of cheap excursion tickets in connection with the football match Thames v. Morrinsville at Morrinsville on Saturday next are advertised in this issue.
A board consisting of Messrs C. S. Appleby, R. J. CHristie, J. F. Mayn, W. R. McCullough, J. Patterson, F. A. J. Plummer, D. J. Rogers,’N. Wallace, and A. Whiteman has been appointed to have control over the Patetonga Domain.
A defunct cow, rather “high,” lying at rest in the Rotokohu creek near the Te Aroha road, demands by its odour the considerate attention of the health inspector'. Besides, it is bad business for cattle which drink nearby.
At a meeting of the newly-consti-tuted shopping and holidays committee of the Waipukurau Chamber of Conimerce a resolution was carried recommending that retail traders close their premises at 8.30 p.m. on the late. Saturday night in the winter period in lieu of the usual hour of 9 o’clock.
Motor spirit imports in the first quartei - of 1929 totalled 11,374,703 gallons, a considerable decrease on the aggregate of 14,780,840 gallons in the corresponding three months of last year. The declared value of the quantity was £455,783. The re-sale value is, of course, much above this. The profits of the bulk distributors, and the re-sellers and the petrol tax of 4d a gallon have to be added, and the value of the quarter’s imports at the pump is well over £1,000,000.
“Of all the provinces in New Zealand, Canterbury is the worst affected as fai’ as goitre is concerned,” said Dr. R. R. D Milligan, who has had the disease when interviewed by the considerable experience in treating “Lyttelton Times” at Christchurch with referece to a statement by Dr. H. G. Denham that 80 per cent, of the girls in some schools in Canterbury and 60 per cent, of the boys had goitre. “The extent to which it exists here is shocking.” The disease had a strong hold all over New Zealand, said Dr. Milligan, and from all reports appeared to be increasing.
