PETROL TAX.
EXTENSION OF ALLOCATION.
COUNCIL’S REQUEST REFUSED.
Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., has forwarded to the Hauraki Plains County Council a reply from the Minister of Lands with reference to the representations made to him by a deputation from the council at Turua in connection with the allocation of petrol tax. The Minister of Transport had advised as follows : “With reference to the request made by the Hauraki Plains County Council for a payment out of the proceeds of the motor spirit taxation to meet the interest and sinking fund charges on rohd loans floated before the introduction of the Main Highways Act, I have to advise that to accede to the request and to other’ local authorities in a similar position would entail the revision of the whole of the operations of the Main Highways Board. The. taxation for the purposes of that board, as at present levied, designed to cover a definite programme of road improvements, and the scope of the board cannot be extended to such cases without a material alteration of legislation to permit of further taxation being levied. At the present juncture it does not appear desirable to make any alteration in this direction, and under the circumstances it is not possible to meet the wishes of the Hauraki Plains County Council.” (
