QUEEN CARNIVAL.
SPORTS QUEEN. DANCE AND EUCHRE. A most enjoyable social evening was spent at Hikutaia on Monday evening, when the funds of the Sports Queen were augmented by a successful dance and euchre tournament.
Splendid music was rendered by the Sports Five Band, which is rapidly becoming famous.
The euchre prize was won by Mrs J. Silcock.
Mr W. Bain, as auctioneer, disposed of surplus eatables, most of which, in the first place, had been donated by Mr 11. Shand.
Mrs Brown, of Hikutaia, helped a great d»nl towards a successful evening, while the merits of Mesdames Nield mid Pennell in the supper-rooni arc too well known to need further extolling. Mrs W. Bain and Mr S. Kerr as social secretaries of the Sports Committee arc to be congratulated on their successful efforts.
FANCY PRESS HOCKEY MATCH A fancy dress hockey match in aid of the Sports Queen, with opposing sides consisting of ladies and men, will take place at the Domain to-mor-row. To make the thing a complete success it is imperative that all players must wear fancy dress. As but few members of the men’s team are, in possession of sticks, those ladies who are not playing are requested to bring along theirs to arm their club mates’ opponents. Following are the teams selected : Ladies. —Z. Parkinson, M. Epps, B. Gibb, E. Nield, R. Gamble, N. Smith, R. Swann, E. McKee, D. Wilson, M. O’Neil, D. Smith. Emergencies : M. Power and F. Wilson. Men.—D. Nield, C. Nield, N. Campbell, T. Pye, L. McDonald, H. Grant, A. Power, C. Chisholm, W. Ashcroft, A. Clowes, F. Knight. Emergencies : E. Robbins and I. McDonald. THE FARMERS’ QUEEN. WINNER OF RUG COMPETITION. The competition for the rug presented by Mr H. J. Hare was closed on Monday evening, the number of entries being entirely satisfactory. The winner was Mrs F., Bryan, of Taumarunui, who estimated the length of tape as 6ft 9in. The correct length was l-16th of an inch less than this. The next nearest was Mrs A. J. Andrews, Ngatea. with 6ft 9iin. At the committee meeting on Monday evening a request was received from the Netherton ladies to hold a refreshment stall at the saleyards on the 22nd inst. in conjunction with the cattle drive. The suggestion was cordially approved by the committee. BUSINESS QUEEN. SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. A very successful concert from both the monetary and excellence of programme points t of view was staged last night in support of the Business Queen, who will benefit by some 1000 votes as a result. Owing to pressure of space to-day the report of the entertainment will be published on Friday. COMING EVENTS. FARMERS’ QUEEN. July 13.—Poultry Drive. At noon to-day the Business Queen was leading, followed by the Farmers’, with Sports third. The fund has reached a total of £272 Ils lOd.
