OBITUARY.
MRS MARY BROWN. 5 I There passed away at her residence r at Rotokohu on Tuesday, July 2, a • very old resident in the person of Mrs Mary Brown. Born 93 years ago, in County . Meath, Ireland, the late Mrs Brown decided in 1867 to emigrate. to New Zealand, and arrived in that year at Dunedin in the sailing vessel, “William Davy,” Cafftain Logan, after an average passage of 90 odd days. At , the end of 12 .months’ sojourn on the , Otago peninsula she decided to try 5 the West Coast, but remained there only ten months, finding the climate unsuitable. She returned to Otago, [ and resided at Otakia, Mosgiel, and Dunedin until ,1877, when she came , North to the Thames. Arriving there t she ran across her cousin, Mr Bart. , Brown, who was engaged in mining . in the district. :As the mining industry was trfen going down to a certain extent, both of them decided to take up land, and came to Ohinemuri , for that purpose. . Hearing of land for sale at Rotokohu, Mr Brown I journeyed out in that direction, a difficult undertaking, there being no roads and no bridges in .those days. The place on the market—the pro- , perty of the late Mr B. C. Fryer—was given a hasty look over and a price decided upon. Three days afterwards ' a string of pack horses brought out furniture and household goods. After the residence had been cleaned up and refurnished the services of the late Father O’Reilly were called upon, and the couple married in the new house in-1877. There the deceased lady resided until her death, hei’ husband having predeceased her some six years ago. There is one son, Mr J. I. Brown, of Rotokohu, to mourn* the loss.
