QUEEN CARNIVAL.

UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEME. EFFECTIVELY LAUNCHED. On Monday evening the three committees connected with the Queen Carnival to further the unemployment scheme held their initial meetings. Enthusiasm was manifest, and several excelle'nt proposals were drawn up, some of which will be acted upon immediately. The Queens. The queens chosen are : Business, Miss I. Masters ; Farmers’, Miss H. Matthews ; and Sports, Miss V. Shand. These three young ladies have graciously consented to fill the roles. The following are the reports of the various committees :— Business Committee. The Business Committee to further the interests of the Business Queen met on Monday night. About twenty-four were present. Mr Edwin Edwards was elected chairman, Mr D. Fraser hon. secretary, and Messrs P. Williams and C. Bassett, honorary treasurers. The meeting unanimously elected Miss Iris Masters as the , Business Queen. Several schemes for raising money were discussed and some accepted. As an initial “stunt” the committee decided to sell bricks for the Cenotaph—at 3d each. Booklets of bricks are being printed at the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” Office, and will be on sale this w r eek. Sub-committees were elected to conduct a social, card parties, paddy’s market, etc. A shooting gallery is also to be erected. Other original schemes will be introduced during the campaign, and the members of the committee are confident of the success of their queen. Farmers’ Committee. A meeting of the Farmers’ Committee was held in Messrs Hare Bros’, office on Monday evening. Mr Hare, the organiser, having explained the objective of the carnival, a lengthy discussion followed, and it was decided to refer certain matters to the carnival executive for consideration.

The election of officers resulted as follows :—

Queen, Miss Helen Matthews: chairman of committee, Mr H. J. Hare ; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. N. O’Neill; committee, Messrs T. C. Arnold, H. H. Bray, A. S. Fisher, C. Mason, D. G. McMillan, L. V. Morris, C. W. Neaber, A. F. Steedman, A. F. Thorp, B. E. Veale, G. H. Vowles, G. M. Wilson, A. J. Young, and V. Young, with power to add ; executive committee, Messrs Hare, Steedman, McMillan, and O’Neill. The Queen’s colour is red.

The question of the boundaries of the district to be interested in the War Memorial was raised, when it was decided that it would not be advisable to make any hard and fast boundary. The district should, however, if the people in the area so desired, extend to and include Waikino, Mangaiti, Kerepeehi, and Wharepoa. The committee decided to bring this matter before the carnival executive, with a view to obtaining the concurrence of the other queen committees. The organising of the ladies’ committee was put in hand, and it was decided to have a “bring and buy” stall in the street on Saturday, the 29th inst. Sports Committee. An enthusiastic meeting of the Sports Committee elected Miss V. Shand as Queen. Various ways and means were discussed to promote success. Sub-com-mittees were formed to deal with the several branches of sport, and the ladies’ committee, assisted by a subcommitttee of men, was appointed to take charge of the social e\evts.

Mr J. W. Silcock was elected chairman, Mr R. L. Miller treasurer, and Mr H. H. Priestley hon. secretary.
