CAR ACCIDENT.

A NASTY SPILL. MACHINE IN DRAIN. A Chevrolet van belonging to Wallace Supplies, Ltd., came to grief in a drain near the Puke bridge yesterday morning. Travelling towards Netherton, the van had just passed over the bridge and, in avoiding some other vehicles, was running in recently graded loose metal at the side of the road when the steering gear broke. The driver immediately applied the brake, saving the van from upsetting sideways, but he was unable to prevent it capsizing into the ditch at the side of the road. Mr N. Neil, the driver, was extreme I ’’ fortunate in escaping serious injury, and received only a few minor cuts and bruises. The force of the impact twisted hi’”, round so that his shoulder and back went through the windscreen first, otherwise his injuries must have been very severe. The van itself was not badly damaged, although put completely out of running order, and was hauled out in the afternoon by a breakdown car and towed back to Paeroa.
