LOCAL AND GENERAL
At the first annual meeting of the newly-constituted Thames Licensing Committee held at Thames on Monday about forty applications were dealt with. The police reports were all favourable in regard to the Waihi and Paeroa hotels, and the renewals were granted practically without discussion.
Don’t forget the Community “Sing” to-night. Remember the watchword proposed by Cr. Edwards—“ Let us all be really enthusiastic.”
The following building permits, to the value of £641 10s, have been granted by the Paeroa Borough Council ; A. Scott, to repair shop owned by F. Wells and Son, Belmont Road ; A. Scott, to carry out repairs to Soldiers’ Club, Wharf Street; C. Pascoe, to erect dwelling, Arney Street; R. I. Roberts, to make alterations and additions to shop owned by Messrs Jones and Kenny, Belmont Road.
The committee of the Plunket Society is conducting a “Bring and Buy” afternoon in the main street to-mor-row. The public are asked to send gifts along and help the babies.
To-night a combined meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society and the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Club will be held in the Soldiers’ Club, commencing at 7.30 o'clock. Delegates from Thames, Te Aroha, and Waihi will be present.
Mrs Lowden, Child Welfare Officer, would be glad of cast-off clothing of any description for local cases of distress. Ring 116 and parcels will be called for.
In spite of the terribly inclement weather on Wednesday night sever’d motorists took advantage of the services of Mr N. E. McAdam, of the A.A.A. patrol, to have their lights adjusted and focussed properly. Practically in every case the lights were found faulty in some way. A very common breach of the regulations is not having the lights so that they do not shine more than 3ft 6in above the surface of the road.
Two new business firms op’ened their doors in Paeroa this week.
A great number of motorists in Paeroa continually infringe on the regulation that prohibits cars from being parked within six feet of a fire plug. No excuse is warranted, as all the plugs in the borough are marked by a white patch. Motorists in their own interests and in the interests of fire prevention, which also indirectly affects them individually, should bear this regulation in mind and adhere to its ruling. Enforcement by legal action is hard, and really is not necessary if only people would give a little thought to the matter.
