KOPU BRIDGE ROAD.
QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE. The first item brought up when the estimates for the year came up for discussion at the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday was the completion of the metalling of the approach road to the Kopu Bridge. This was estimated to cost £3. Members were of opinion that it would be unfair to load this on to the Kopuarahi riding, as the bridge was a county matter and the road was to all intents and purposes part of the bridge. The road had been handed over to the council by the Public Works Department before it was completed. Discussion ensued as to whether the County Fund should bear the cost of maintenance for one year or for all time. Cr.. Fisher advocated putting the road down in a permanent material before handing it over to the Kopuarahi riding, and Cr. Parfitt advocated reviewing the position next year. A division negatived the maintenance for all time by the whole county, being supported by only Crs. Mayn and Hale, and another amendment authorising the County Fund to maintain the road for a year and then review the position was also lost, the supporters being Crs. Parfitt, Hale, Mayn, and McDuff. It was therefore decided, on the votes of Crs. Fisher, Reid, Motion, Madgwick, and Harris, to maintain the road for a year and then hand it over to the Kopuarahi riding.
