DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA. I HALL SOCIETY. The committee of the Ngatea Public Hall Society met last evening, Mr G. T. Davidson presiding over Messrs G. Phillips, S. Phillips, W. P. Wylde, and S. Tarver (secretary). The matter of arranging to have the frontage of the hall metalled was left to the president to confer with the county engineer. The secretary was instructed to pay off the arrears of the township street lighting and to arrange to have the lights switched on with the exception of the one on the bridge. On the motion of Mr G. Phillips it was agreed to instal a telephone in the secretary’s residence. An offer to renew the motion picture screening agreement was received from Mr H. A. Hamilton. It included the right to screen talking pictures and sound synchronising. The committee agreed to make a counter offer. The financial statement for the month of May showed receipts totalling £l7 19s 3d, and expenditure, including a proportion of the annual charges, £l2 Is 6d. The bank overdraft stood at £62 7s lid. There was £l3 15s due to the society, and accounts owing totalled £5 13s. Mr J. King was appointed to act as secretary and booking agent during the absence on leave of Mr Tarver. CHURCH SOCIAL. The Ngatea Church of England ladies held one of their regular dances last Wednesday evening, an enjoyable time being spent by the small number who attended. Mr J. Neate was M.C., and the music was by Miss Birkenhead (piano), Messrs S. Coppins (saxophone), A. Kewene (violin), M. Martin (banjo), J. King (saxophone), and H. Barriball (drums). The prizes for the euchre tourna-’ ment were won by Miss Irwin and M. L. Cotter, while Mrs Barriball and Mr H. ,B. Sparrow received consolation prizes.
