EAST COAST ROAD.
HIKUAI-TAIRUA DISTRICT. CONSTRUCTION COMMENCED. The construction of the Hikuai-Tairua-Whenuakite road by relief workers, as authorised by Cabinet recently, is well under way. Some 110 men are at present employed, and a mile of road has already been constructed. The surveyed route passes through country which is very similar to that met with on the WaihiWhangamata road, so that construction should not be difficult. The stretch at present in hand is the last link in a highway whereby a round trip may be made from Paeroa through Thames, Coromandel, Mercury Bay, Hot Water Beach, Tairua, W’hangamata, Waihi, and on to Paeroa. Thus it will readily be realised —apart from the opening up of land and commercial communicaion—what scenic beauties will be made available to the public. Valley, mountain, sea, and bush alternate to make a road of surpassing grandeur which will in the future become a most popular* tour.*
