Thames H.S. 8, v. Ngatea Ladies 1. FOOTBALL. EAST V. SUBURBS. On their first visit to Paeroa this season Suburbs defeated East at the Domain on Saturday, thus maintaining their unbeaten record. Right on time the following teams took the field in a drizzling rain :— East.—Treanor, Ashcroft, Wilkinson, Williams, Kusabs, Allison, Moore, Murray, Lloyd, Johnson, Flatt, Fitch, Nealie, Neil, and Neil. Suburbs.—Rare, Royal, Bennett, Harper, McGarvey, Mcßae, F. Morrison, Meredith, Veddar, Duncan, Tohu, A. Morrison, Thomas, Killgour, and O’Hara. Shortly after the commencement, as the result of good work by Neil, Moore was enabled to have a pot at goal from a fairly favourable position, but the tricky wind carried the ball wide. Suburbs returned to the line at half-way. Play worked up and down the field, with Suburbs showing to better advantage. Lloyd checked a Suburbs rush by a mark. Thomas broke away at a great pace and carried on to the line, where Duncan got over far out to score. Mcßae missed with the kick. Suburbs 3, East 0. Moore was playing a hard game, and was in the thick of it everywhere. Ashcroft started a good passing bout which was spoilt by a bad pass. A pretty back movement ended by East forcing. Kusabs cleared by finding the line. Duncan got away with the ball at toe, but Kusabs stopped him by falling on the bail. Mcßae took a mark but failed to score. In close play near Suburbs’ line Moore broke away and crossed the line. The kick failed. Suburbs 3, East 3.
After the change-over Tohu passed to his backs, the ball travelling out to the wing, who, after making some headway, was tackled and thrown out. Royal cleared well. Mcßae started a good passing movement which was broken up by Moore. Mcßae again set his backs moving and a sore seemed asured, but a fumbled greasy ball enabled East to force. McGarvey, with a clear field ahead of him, missed his chance by overrunning the ball. Kusabs stopped a forward rush in fine style. Kusabs was playing a fine game, continually spoiling Suburbs. Mcßae set off on his own, but had to find the line. as he lacked support. Suburbs in a good forward rush dribbled over the line, but Kusabs again saved by diving on the ball. Halftime sounded with Suburbs pressing hard on East’s line.
On the resumption of play Moore headed a movement into Suburbs’ territory, but the defenders worked out again, Treanor clearing well. Tohu set his backs moving and Mcßae was thrown out with the ball. East made a good recovery and rushed down the field and over the line, but the ball went over the dead-ball line. East immediately crossed again, only for Wilkinson to. force. Another passing rush by the Suburbs backs broke down through a knock-on. The greasy ball made handling very difficult. The two Neils and Flatt showed up splendidly throughout the game, being hard at it all the time, as were Thomas and O’Hara for Suburbs. Thomas was the pick of the Suburbs pack, playing a hard, gruelling game. Moore was continually in evidence, saving his side time and again and starting many attacking movements. A mark by Kusabs saved from a dangerous development. A sustained attack by Suburbs on East’s line terminated, with A. Morrison diving over near the corner. The kick failed. Suburbs 6, East 3. Commencing the final round Mcßae set off on his own, but was stopped by Moore. Mcßae was playing fine football, although a tendency to keep too close to the line robbed him of some excellent openings. Moore missed with a drop-kick at goal. Tohu was continually prominent. Offside play spoilt Suburbs. Mcßae started a passing bout which gained a lot of ground. East committed a breach, but Mcßae failed to score with the kick. Mcßae again opened up for McGarvey to terminated a fine individual effort with a try. The kick was unsuccessful. Suburbs 9, East 3. Moore and Flatt gained a little ground in a dual movement. Mcßae was brought down with the ball. Harper set the backs going, Royal missing a pass near the line, the ball going out in touch. Suburbs kept up the pressure, and were unfortunate on several occasions. East worked out and Rare cleared with a line kick. This player was responsible for some clever saves. Ashcroft was brought down in possession. Lloyd showed to advantage. The end came with Suburbs pressing strongly, the scores being, Suburbs 9, East 3. Mr F. T. V. Johnson was referee.
WEST V. PIRATES. The West v. Pirates match, on the No. 2 ground, was very closely contested, and resulted in a draw, both sides registering three points. Knight scored a good try for west as a result of a nice passing bout, while Bax kicked a penalty goal for Pirates. Mr T. W. Jonas was referee.
