Petty thefts from motor-cars in Paeroa still continue. , On Friday afternoon several articles were pilfered from a car parked outside a local hairdresser’s, while the owner was inside the shop. In the evening a car in Princes Street was relieved of some eggs aild 1 ; other comestible articles. The total estimated population of New Zealand on March 31 was 1,470,649, and that of its dependencies and mandated territory. 59,071, making a grand total of 1,529,720. It is notified in the Gazette that Empire Day will be observed in New Zealand on Monday, June 3, in conjunction with the anniversary of the King’s birthday. A business men’s meeting will be held in the Soldiers’ Hall at 8 p.m. on Thursday, for the purpose of discussing ways and means of prommentlj’ placing Paeroa’s first all Saturday opening before the public. All those interested, and all Paeroa should be, are invited to attend. It will mean a big thing for the town,. and by cooperation should be a great success. A scheme for enabling miners to occupy small farms on which they could work during slack periods at the mines has been placed before the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, at Huntly. For this purpose an area of 3200 acres near the Rotowaro mines was offered on behalf of Mr W. J. Ralph. A feature of the offer was that Mr Ralph would accept payment in .4J per cent, debentures. It was stated that the miners were at present working only five shifts a fortnight. The Minister said he understood there was difficulty in’the way of cutting up the sections, but when that question and the question of water had been decided the matter would be placed before the Land Purchase Board. In continuance of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s policy, several excellent improvements are being carried out at the racecourse. The lawns in front of the grandstand are being levelled and re-laid, and some adjustments made in order to ensure a clearer view of the course from the stand; Torrential rain fell in Paeroa on Monday evening and continued almost unabated until the early hours of this morning. The Ohinemuri River rose considerably during the time, and now presents a swollen and muddy appearance. Clifford White, Netherton, pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle without a light at Paeroa, and was fined 10s and 10s costs at the Paeroa Police Court. A notice in the Gazette fixes the hours of closing fruiterers’ shops in Te Aroha as under : From November to the last day of February, at 10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and 11 p.m. qn Saturdays ; between March 1 and October 31 they will close at 9.30 p.m. on all days except Saturdays, when 11 p.m. will be the closing hour.
