THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, MAY 6, 1929. LOCAL AND GENERAL

At half-pact t'hree on Saturday afterncon a D.H. Moth aeroplane, heading towards the East Coast and flying some 8,600 ft. up, passed over Paeroa. Wheat directly over the town it banked slightly as if about to commence a spiral descent, instead of which it straightened out anfl proceeded on its course. A resolution was passed at the last meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council to the effect that as the additional water supply from the new dam on Green’s Creek was now available, the charge to the Paeroa Borough Council should be £350 per annum from July 1, as previously arranged. By a majority of 83 votes Waipukurau has adopted Wednesday as the half-hoiday. This is a reversion after ten years of closing on Saturday. Ha.wejra has retained Wednesday as the half-holiday by a majority of 701 votes, thus showing its confidence in the s aturday shopping day. Several works are now In progress in Ngatea which, when completed, will make an improvement in the appearance of the township. The drain in front of the boardinghouse is being piped, the post office is being painted, and two business firms are having their premises painted. On Thursday evening an enjoyable social was held in the Anglican Church Hall, the first of a series it is proposed to hold during the winter. Bridge, 500, and dancing were thoroughly appreciated by a large number of participants. Supper, provided and arranged by ‘■he ladies, in its excellence left nothing to be desired. The proceeds of this initial evening, amounting to £7, are to be devoted to the funds of the church choir. Hauraki Plains is becoming a brighter place, despite the apathy of the people of Ngatea and Kerepeehi townships in the matter of street lights. A start has been made with the County Council’s proposal to have street lights installed throughout the county at those road corners where the sharpness of the turn and the proximity of drains constitute a danger to strangers. “ Most of the hajm from pipes is due tc their foulness.” Thus wrote Sir Robert Armstrong Jones, a distinguished authority, recently in the British Medical Journal. Sir Robert might have added tihat the main cause of pipes becoming foul is the use of tobacco heavily charged with nicotine. Such tobaccos may (and often do) cause nerve trouble eyesight trouble, heart trouble and chronic indigestion. Happily here in New Zealand ailments occasioned by excess of nicotine in tobaccos are becoming rarer. This is owing to the growing popularity of pur New Zealand tobaccos which thanks to their comparative freedom from nicotine may be indulged in freely without any fear of consequences. That’s why doctors recommend them. Another point in their favour is that the leaf is toasted (something new !).. Hence ftheir delightful fragrance/ and delicious flavour,. You can get them of any strength. There are several varieties. Leading lines are:— “ Riverhead Gold, ” mild and aromatic; “Navy Cut” (Bulldog), a choice medium, and “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) a fine full flavoured sort. Any tobacconist will supply you.* Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure For Influenza Colds.
