THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

Sir, —I trust you will kindly permit publication of this in reply to the diatribe of Mr H. V. Cocks’ and accept my deepest apologies for being obliged to again trespass on your valuable space. Mr Cocks has made the statement that I am ashamed of my name and argument owing to my writing under a nom de plume. On the 24th of this month my views on the half-holiday question were published, and on this account I have incurred his wrath, or he would have attacked “Veritas” in like fashion but for the ,fact that the letter was also an advocate of Saturday shopping day. To lend any strength to his outburst he should at least be consistent. In to-day's “Herald,” of sixteen letters to the Editor there were only two which did not; have a nom de plume. Would he suggest that these correspondents were' all ashamed ? I dispute his statement that New Zealand has looked for her principal athletic representatives in Taranaki. Taranaki was once a big-factor to be reckoned with in Rugby,'but was not this before the war ? It has been frequently represented in the All Blacks since, but what other big centre has not ? In other sports Taranaki has not been outstanding. Although discourteous, Mr H. V. Cocks has been very entertaining; as his remarks sparkle with unconscious humour. He suggests that I “play up, and play the game,” which, of course, leads one to infer that he has always been its living advocate. But there, again, you see the subtle humour creeping forth. As a literary effort his letter is. very weak; nor are his arguments Abound. In again signing myself “Jack” I’ll be overwhelmed with shame, but content to bear my cross in the knowledge that I am writing for pastime and not for advertisement. JACK.
