HAURAKI RUGBY PROBLEM. LACK OF REFEREES. A serious position faces Rugby football on the Hauraki Plains at present, as there is an ac.ute shortage of referees. Owing to lack of members the Refqrees’ Association has found it impossible to function for the time bepng. On two occasions the annual meeting of the association has been called.. The secretary was the only one, to turn u-. for the first meeting, and though the seriousness of the matter was mentioned at the Rugby annua] meeeting, and c,lubs werq urged to interest old players in refereeing, only Messrs G. T. Davidson, J. Reed, E. Flavell, and J- Gribble attended the second meeting. In reporting verbally op the past season, the president, Mr G. T. Davidson, said that at the beginning of the season many men had. promised to become referees, but they had not agreqcl to control games when called upon, gome referees had declined to continue, as they took exception to an action of the Rabgy Union’s Judicial Committee in not punishing a certain player who had been suspended on the score that the referee/ had made a mistake. It was a rule that the referee was to le the sole judgq °f matters of fact, and his decisions could only be queried on points of law. Towards end of the season there Was a shortage of referees, and, as the annual report of the Rugby Union had stated, .the position was nnot satisfactory. The union had treated the association well, and had done all it had been asked to do. It. had only experienced difficulty in securing men to act as referees. As het had accepted! the presidency of a club he; did not intend to continue as a member of the Referees Association. The secretary’, Mr J. Reid, reported that the whole of the receipts for the past year from mepnbers’ subscriptions had been used for telephone messages, etc. After a brief discussion on the best course of action Mr G. T. Davidson moved that in view of the lack of interest shown by the attendance at the two meetings called this season thq association was unable .to carry on, and that the Hauraki Plains Rug r by Union bq asked to assuniq its functions until such time as the association was again able to operate. The Rugby Union is arranging referees for the interejub matches on Saturday next-
