LOCAL AND GENERAL

For the 24 hours from Friday at 9 a.m. to Saturday, .29 of an inch of rain fell, and for the 48 hours to this morning .03 of an inch fell, making a total of 3.69 inches since Tuesday last, as registered at the Public Works Department’s office at Paeroa. On Sunday morning the wind veered round from the east to the west, resulting in several heavy showers. A further change to the south-west continued until late in the afternoon, and, settling in the south, the weather brightened considerably and fine weather has set in again.

In connection with the forthcoming borough and county elections it will be well for electors to bear in mind the alteration which was made by the “Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act, 1926,” with reference to voting on behalf of any firm, co-partnership, or joint tenants whose name or names appear on the roll. Formerly the practice was, in the case of a co-partnership or joint tenancy, for the vote to be exercised by the person whose name was entered first on the roll in respect to that qualification. Under the amendment it is necessary that the firm or joint tenants shall give to some person, not necessarily a member of the partnership, authority in writing for such person to exercise the vote, and this authority must be produced to the returning officer.

An outbreak of Blackleg, in which eight calves on one farm at Matamata died, occurred about a fortnight ago. A settler purchased 30 Jersey calves at a sale, and soon after they reached home four- out of a pen of five died suddenly. The rest of the herd, upon a veterinarian’s advice, were inoculated, but this did not save three of them from death. Blackleg is a serious disease, and until a few years ago it was deemed necessary to enforce the inoculation of all calves.

The Parish Paper of the Hauraki Plains Parochial District records that his, Grace the Archbishop .will, visit that part of his diocese next month. He will conduct confirmation service at Turua on May 12, at 11 ami., and at Kerqpeehi at 7.30 p.m., and! will preach at Ngatea at 2.30 p.m. Ou the Monday evening .he jvill hold service at Kaihcre, and on.
