MOTOR BUS BURNED.
WHITE STAR SERVICE. ABLAZE NEAR WAITAKARURU. An Auckland passenger bus was burned alongside the Pokeno Road a few miles beyond WaitakarurU early yesterday morning. Those whe were astir in Waitakfiruru township early in the morning noted and commented on the fact that a strange bus passed through from the direction of Miranda at a great speed. ‘A settler who saw the bus, and who went along the highway a short time afterwards, found the vehicle ablaze, but not sufficiently burned that it might not have been saved with a fire extinguisher. There was no sign of the driver or his companion. The marks on the road showed that the bus had passed through the cutting beyond the Morrinsville Road corner, and had then turned off the metal and run down the side of the filling to stop when a fence was struck. From the route taken it appeared strange that the vehicle had not capsized. The low gear was engaged. With the exception of one tyre and wheel, the vehicle was well burned.
The bus had a white star emblem on the radiator cap, and painted in big letters along the side and back were the words “Passenger Transport Service.” An Auckland City license place was visible. The chassis was a “Buddy Stewart,” and the body was painted red with, a yellow top. Its registration number was 5—203.
