SCHOOL MATTERS
The. Ngatea District High School Committee held its monthly meeting
on Monday evening, Mr W. McDuff presiding over Messrs C. S. Foster, R. Rowling, C. Vagg, R. Cornthwaitcj, AV. Wylde ? E. C. Rarriball (secretary) and Mr W. Chappell, headmaster.
The secretary of the Education Board forwarded a report from its architect with regard to the committee’s request for. the installation of a septic tank, and advised that in view of. the report the Board would be unable to authorise the installation.. „ The report was as follows : have now received definite information regarding the tide levels, and have to point out that ordinary spring tide is level with the school sitet and storm spring tide is one- foot above same. It is therefore apparent that the outlet from the septic tank and all drainage must be oW.er one foot above the ground, so it would be unwise to rely entirely on a back flap at the end of the drain. As the drain must be 15 inches under the read the effluent pipes would be full for a long period', and with c,ontibued flushing during this period from a large number of compartments then - would be a possibility of the tarn; overflowing. Although realising, the importance of a watqp* flushed system of drainage at Ngatea. school 1 do not recommend l the installation of. a septic tank.”
Mr .McDuff said' that it had been explained to the architect that septic tanks at the factory manager’s residence and at several private residences were working satisfactoiih', but it appeared' that the architect would not rec.omnie(nd the proposal at any cost. The chairman of the Education Board 'had said that if the committee could get an engineer to show the Board how the difficulties stated by the architect could overcome, the Board would not raise financial objections.
It was agreed that the chairman ask the county engineer, to go into the matter.
The secretary of the Education Board advised' that the matter of additional 'accommodation for the secondary department of the district high, school had been referred to the advisory inspector- for a report. The headmaster mentioned that thq inspector had not yet made a visit.
. Mr A. W. Hall, M.P., wrote advising that the Hon. H. Atmore would visit the electorate some time; this month.
It was decided to bring up the matter of additional accom, modation and increased playing areas. The Education Boar.d advised for the year 1929 school vacations would be as follows. May: Two weeks commencing May 13. AugustSeptembqr: Two weeks andi one day from August 28. Christmas; From 3 p.m. on Friday, December, 20, to Monday, February 3.
