LATE CAPTAIN PEACOCK.
MONUMENT UNVEILED. TRIBUTE BY MAORI EX-SOLDIERS. A monument to thq'memory of Captain Henry Pejacwk, Ovß-E., N.Z.S.C., commander, of the first Maori battalion to leave for the Great War, was unveiled cin Sunday, 17th inst., at ,o’Niell’s Point Cemetery, Auckland, by Major Roger Dansey in the presence of a largq gathering of Europeans and natives.
Mr.s Pe;acock, w'dow! of the late commander, and her three sons were present. Captain Peacock was for some years Adjutant to the ISauraki Regiment at Paeroa. .
The memorial ■ is of Coromandel granite, buit in thq form of a Celtic. Cress on a,granite base, and is, about 7ft high. The late Captain Henry Peacock left New Zealand in command of the first contingent of 500 Maori soldiers, but was invalided home from Perth after a severe; attack of enteric fever. After recovery he was in. c.harge of Nauow Neck Camp for some considerable time. He wa,s greatly love.d by the Maoris as Officer. Commandling, and as a testimony of- their tovqjor him .they have erected the monument. After the Armistice Captain Peacock joined the Permanent Force, with headquarters at Paeroa, and h.e held that position jintil his. death, which occurred on October 21, 1924. As'a citizen of Paeroa for a. number of years Captain Peacock was greatly esteemed 1 . ■ ,■ , ■
