POLICE COURT.

MONDAY’S SITTING AT PAEROA. CASES BEFORE MAGISTRATE. Befo’le Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., in the Paeroa Police Court on Monday, the following eases were heard :— DRIVING WITHOUT LICENSE. William Ashcroft, who did not appear, was charged with, driving, :» motor lorry between Paeroa and Te Aroha on February 15 without being the holder of. a motor-driver’s license. Evidence showed that he was the holder of a motor-cyclist’s license, but not the required one. Defendant was lined 10s, with 10s costs. CLAIM FOR MAINTENANCE. John Horace James Johnson appeared charged with disobedience of payment of child maintenance to the State. Arrears to February 18, .1929, amounted to £lO 10s. Evidence was g,iveu that a,c,cured had three children and one grandchild who were wards of the State. Johnson (Mr Carden) in the wit-ness-box saitl he had a farm of. Hl acres subject to two mortgages, and on which he milked 36 cows, half the number he previously had. He had a motor-car which he used very seldom and was endeavourng to sell through an agent. One offer had been received but was not good enough, and! the car was still on the market. He was also tryng to sell the farm, over which a mortgage for £9o* was being pressed for and on which £36 arrears of rent was owing. He was separated from his wife, and had paid her separation allowance up to (fete. He was trying to keep abreast of things, but had not ■much chanc.e owing to his cows showing a poor return as a result of the dry season. The magistrate, i.n remitting the arrears to date, warned Johnson that in future he must pay state charges first.
