SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
PAEROA SICHOOI CHiUDBEN. A SUCCESSFUL EVENT. That tire building of the swimming baths has justified itself well bc-rne out- on Wednesday, when the Paeroa- District High School held! i ts first afternoon carnival. There upwards cf 200 competitors, a lars e propQrjtion of whom had learned to swim and dive in the this season. The carniva’ was put on and the gate-money handed to the Borough Council in recognition of. the treatment and consideration by the ccmiicil in granting free use of baths to the children at certain times when they were under the supervision of a teacher. This privilege; [has been greatly availed of, and in consequence the pupils have received instruction in the art of. swimming throughout the summer. Messrs Preston and Insley were; responsible for tfie organisation, and .were ably assisted by all the teaching staff. Resides the teacher?, Mr F. G. Williams aqted as starter, Mr F. J. Watson judge of the diving, and Messrs W. E. War;d, D. R. F t aser, and W. D. Nicholas; acted a.s judges of the s.wimraing events. Tiie competitions were all and there were no prizes. Competitors were ( admitted te the baths free, the other children paying 3d apd adults 6d. The, gate takings totalled £4‘ Us 3d, which sum was handed to the Borough Ceuncll.
The carnival was interesting from start to finish, and the events, .were got off with a smoothness that did the organisation great credit. The children were all keen, and some vej-’y good racing was the result. Following are the results■ 33 l-3yds, high school and primary boys: First heat, J. Silcock LRCampbell 2 ; second heat, P. A meeting of the local Swimming Club’s committee was held last night to finalise matters in connection with tiie forthcoming carnival. The officials were elected, and it was decided to again have hot coffqe for,.the competitors and also- apportion for them some seating space handy to the starting point. The offer of assitanc.e from Miss HNorth and her team of workers was gladly S WIM Ml NG CHAM PIONS. It. was decided to endeavour to secure scone of the; champions to give an exhibition of swimming at the carnival. WORKING BEE. It was decided to hold a working •bee on Saturday afternoon to push on with the er.ecticfli of the seating, CLUB PRIZES. The secretary reported that the special committee elected to go into the matter of prizes won at the last carniva.l had purchased them, and they, had Ixjen forwanied to Auckland for engraving.
